BFI Short Film

Young people learning how to make short films

About the Project

Cody O’Connor was frustrated that people on his estate were not socialising as much as they could. Having participated in a workshop at British Film Institute, he endeavoured to close the gap on the estate by bringing his fellow young people to the BFI. As a Peabody Young Leader, Cody produced a workshop on zombie filmmaking with the help of a tutor from the BFI.

The Impact

The project was moderately attended with young people from the York House estate participating. Working with filmmakers from the industry, students learned skills that are not taught in school, such as script writing, camera work, zombie make-up, acting for the camera and editing, among others. There were also refreshments. Young people and their families from the estate had a chance to socialise for the first time because of Cody’s organisational skills.

Each participant got the opportunity to be in the film and the production was led by Cody and supported by Jo from the BFI. The feedback from young people was 100% positive although everyone was very tired at the end of the day. Making zombies come to life is hard work!

Cody saw an opportunity to use his power as a Young Leader for a positive outcome. This was a way to bring young people from the estate together to form a more cohesive community.

Future Developments

The film was uploaded onto the BFI YouTube channel for the broader audience and subsequently screened at the BFI. Check it out in the link below. From this experience, Young Leader Cody is interested in script writing and will pursue that area. In another development, one of the parents that accompanied the group to the workshop has since been working with the BFI on several youth-focused projects.
