Environmental Project - YouthBuild

An ambitious environmental and community project

In March 2021, YouthBuild Barnardo’s students have completed an ambitious environmental and community project in Lewisham at Peter Pan Park and the adjacent play park and Chestnut Close Residential Estate. The project has been supported by Peabody Young Leaders Programme.  The students wanted to create a refreshed play park and refurbished sitting areas for the local residents which they could enjoy as the warm spring has been emerging and COVID lockdown rules are being relaxed.

The project also focused on the wildlife preservation, in particular Peter Pan Park has got such a rich history within Lewisham community and it is a wildlife oasis retreat within a busy city. Young people have built some beautifully crafted nesting boxes and insect hotels, a perfect time of the year when the birds are nesting and the whole nature is coming back to life.  They have also shown great commitment to the environment by making best use of recycling materials.

Phoenix Repairs Service (PRS) and Phoenix Housing Environmental team have fully supported the student’s ambition to run the environmental project that would bring some much positivity during a difficult COVID lockdown period and support the local residents’ well-being.  PRS environmental team has provided guidance, valuable advice and hands on support to the students during the project as well they helped out with the paint for the benches and hand rails.

YouthBuild Young Leaders also worked closely with the Peabody Young Leaders project team and secured £1400 funding for sourcing the equipment and materials for completing the works on the project. In addition, they used the site evidence to complete a Level 2 Project Management and Young Leader qualifications which is a great achievement that enhances their CVs and brings them closer to work opportunities.

Chantelle, YouthBuild student and a Phoenix Housing resident and Devonte carried out the Project Manager roles alongside all the other 10 students who have worked extremely hard to deliver some great works notwithstanding the rainy and windy weather encounter during works.

Also, a big shout out to Jemma, a Barnardo’s YouthBuild Graduate Class 2020 and Phoenix’ tenant who volunteered on the project and not only she is an incredible role model but also she has been a great mentor on site.

All students have shown some great leadership throughout the project, from team management and organising materials and health and safety, to making sure they motivate one another, and keep focused on solution to help them overcome any issues on site.   More importantly they have set a great example within their local community and the local residents have praised them for their work and respectful behaviour.

On completion of the works, the students have carried out an inspirational presentation to community leaders where they have showcased the project storyline and the great feeling of pride to be able to contribute to their local community and set up a legacy for the young people in Lewisham.

Shenaaz Chenia, YouthBuild Ventures CEO said the YouthBuild Barnardo’s are hugely valuing the great partnership with Phoenix Repairs Services and Phoenix Housing who share our passion to opportunity youth and seeing young people for their potential to becoming responsible citizens and leaders within their community. We would like to thank Phoenix Environmental Team for supporting us throughout the project.
