Mums at First Sight
Enterprise, employment and support programme for mothers
After experiencing postnatal depression as a new mother, Teresa’s health visitor was essential to her recovery, encouraging her to attend baby groups and get out of the house. However, Teresa realised that all of the groups were focused on her as a mother, rather than her as a young woman with a future.
This led to a place on an enterprise programme by Urban MBA, one of Peabody’s partners, to develop her idea of an organisation for mothers who wanted to find their identity again, start their own businesses or return to work. This would take the form of events, drop ins and coffee mornings where women would have the space to think about their futures.
Through Young Leaders, Teresa ran a launch event with 25 women and is now working with one of her attendees and a Peabody Community Development Worker to develop a programme of coffee mornings that build the skills of mothers who want to start an enterprise or build their confidence for work. These sessions will also include volunteering opportunities to run a creche and allow the women the time to learn and share skills.
