Employers join young recruits on home patch for career fair
About the Project
The Pembury Connect was a job fair with a twist designed to have employers pitching their job opportunities to young people in an informal environment. The format aimed to help to bridge the gap between employers and young people.
The activity was put together so that young people on the Pembury estate could meet employers with live employment opportunities. Monique knew that young people find it difficult to get interviewed and know about the opportunities out there, so the event intended to bring the opportunities to them on their patch and encourage the community to engage more with the opportunities that were being offered.
10 employers pitched job opportunities to young people of Pembury Estate and surrounding areas. There were refreshments and entertainment to create a relaxed and youth-friendly environment. There was also a 30 minute networking opportunity for young people and employers to have informal discussion and make connections. Young people who attended the fair gained a sense of control and empowerment in finding employment through the event and interacting with employers.
Young people have been asking when the next event is going to be as they want to be involved. This has shown that the community in Pembury very much feel empowered and Monique is eager to run similar events in the future.
