Self reflection and self portraits
Art classes with the opportunity to think about how you see yourself
Alish led art workshops with a group of older Peabody residents in sheltered accommodation in Wandsworth and an art therapy group for Peabody residents with complex mental health needs in Sutton. The self-portraits took place without mirrors to allow participants to draw themselves as they see themselves, leading to some very abstract and interesting work. Alish also taught some useful drawing, shading and perspective skills. Some participants had not drawn for years.
The workshops were well received, especially in the art therapy group, and have opened up the channels between Peabody services to enable young people to deliver their activities to a wider community than their direct peers.
We aim to build on this achievement as it deepens the impact of the young people’s work and changes perspectives on what young people offer their community. Our complex mental health needs schemes in Sutton and Brixton are interested in further activities and will also be working with their own younger residents to become Young Leaders themselves.
